Tips for Grantwriting

Grant writing is not for every artist. Some prefer not to take time away from their studio work or are able to live off sales and commissions. However, those who do want to take advantage of what public and private funding should take on the task of grantwriting wholeheartedly. Attached is a list of common sense guidelines for grantwriting.

The application process

  • Research what is available - sometimes one opportunity will lead to another.
  • Do not try to fit you "square" needs into a funder's "round" opportunities.
  • Demystify the process of grant writing and approach requirements one step at a time.
  • There is not a special language as grantwriting. The grantors will ask for exactly what they are seeking.
  • Do answer everything that is asked of you.
  • Do not assume something is requested only for another applicant, or ignore a question if you do not readily have an answer.
  • Call the grantee as many times as needed so that you are as clear as possible before sending in your application.
  • Research the entire application package before you call. Your answer might be in a seperate section or answered in a frequently asked question.

Submitting materials

  • Do make a commitment to providing the best quality samples of the work you are most excited about as an artist. This is usually your most current work.
  • Do send in professional, neat, up to date supporting materials.
  • Do not send in a resume that has a old address which is crossed out, or a narrative that has not been proof read.
  • Do talk about your art as an individual, from your own perspective and emphasizing your own vision.
  • Do not present an artist statement that is etherial, overly informal or makes references to what "art is about" in a universal way.
  • Do include all required materials in an organized presentation.
  • Do not try to gain points with elaborate packaging, which will likely be discarded.

Follow-up after a decision is made

  • Do thank those who have helped you if you receive an award. (Or even if you don't!)
  • Do not shy away from other opportunities if your first attempt is not successful.
  • Do ask for feedback, even if that is not readily offered.
  • Do not be afraid of rejection but challenge yourself and respect your own abilities.

Hopefully, this has prompted you to stir up your own list, making you a more successful communicator over all. Now that you are ready take a look at our opportunities section for the latest in your artistic field.
