Grant: $5,000This grant supports Haystack’s 2012 summer exhibitions celebrating two distinctly different mediums and traditions: Amy Stacey Curtis: Drawings about Time and Ragged Beauty will provide exposure for Maine artist Amy Stacey Curtis’s work to a national and international audience of Haystack attendees, as well as island residents and visitors to the area. The second exhibit, Ragged Beauty curated by Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada (one of the foremost experts in shibori techniques), provides a rare opportunity to see a world-class collection of Japanese textiles in Maine.
Grant: $17,000This grant will support an ambitious and dynamic project that re-stages, re-interprets and re-imagines arguably one of the greatest works of the 20th century, Igor Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Sharing a birthday with Portland Ovation’s primary venue, Stravinsky’s seminal masterpiece will anchor a season-long centennial celebration of the city owned landmark concert hall Merrill Auditorium. Through the lens of shared centennials, Portland Ovations will celebrate the enduring influence, significance and artistic excellence of Rite of Spring both onstage and off with performances by award winning pianists So Yeon Lee and Ran Dank, America’s premier wind ensemble Imani Winds, the adventurous jazz trio the Bad Plus and the world-renown Joffrey Ballet.
