BLUE HILL – Words and images will be the focus of “Messages”, an exhibition at the Blue Hill Public Library from October 2 to 31 by three local artists, Heidi Daub and Avy Claire of Blue Hill and Susan Webster of Deer Isle. The artists all incorporate language with their work as visual artists, and the three have been discussing how the cultural power of language informs their creative processes. This exhibit allows them to have that conversation through the art work itself.

Avy Claire says about her work: "What text can conjure in my mind is personal, expansive, and fleeting. Embedding text into an image makes it visible beyond myself and forms a bridge that spans the two with another layer of meaning.”

According to Heidi Daub, “Writing partners with my visual work in various ways, through journaling, poetry, and as an incorporated element within a work. Often in conjunction with painting, the act of writing—like drawing itself--opens up avenues of centering, understanding and discovery.”

Susan Webster explains, "It's the relationship between text and image that inspires me. Whether I incorporate words directly into a piece or not, the mysterious connection between image and text--however unlikely-- creates a new union of layered meaning that often surprises me and moves the work forward."

The exhibit opens October 2 and is available for viewing during Library hours with the part of the exhibit in the Howard Room subject to the meeting room schedule. The public is invited to a reception to meet the artists on Friday, October 9 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. For more information contact the Library at 207-374-5515.
