Empower the Immigrant Woman (EIW) will host its inaugural Trailblazers Gala on Saturday, May 21st at Hannaford Hall on the University of Southern Maine campus in Portland.

Founded in 2016 by Mufalo Chitam, an immigrant from Zambia, Empower the Immigrant Woman's mission is to provide tools, resources and inspiration to other immigrant women in Maine to find appropriate employment.

Despite many organizations' efforts to help integrate immigrants, "non-native" Mainers experience twice the unemployment and double the poverty as native Mainers.

Chitam's hopes are to "educate and raise awareness of the resources and services that are available to help address the work and business development challenges affecting motivated and dedicated Maine immigrant women.... as well as create a platform to recognize and honor trailblazer women, with inspirational stories of empowerment, perseverance and wisdom, who are serving and changing Maine communities."

The 6 women being honored Betty Ayoub Kabbashi (South Sudan),  Nagham Rikan (Iraq), Vicky Tshiama (Democratic Republic of Congo), Abusana Micky Bondo (Democratic Republic of Congo), Makara S. Meng (Cambodia), and Maria Elisabete Ferriera Cushing (Cape Verde).
