The Brick House Gallery, at 176 Winslow Mills Road (Route 32)  in the historic river town of Waldoboro, will showcase 17 Annual Eastern Views, a collection Jean Kigel’s recent paintings on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday – August 7th, 8th, and 9th from 10:00AM–5:00PM each day. On Friday, August 7th the public is invited to a reception from 5:00–7:00PM. 

Among Kigel’s important works is “Broken Light” from her new, watercolor series of geometric landscapes.  As if seen from a remote distance, trees, rocks, and light become trapezoids, parallelograms, and polyhedrons.  These paintings evolve when location, scale, and orientation are removed. 

Another important piece is Jeté, an Asian brush painting.  Abstract in a different way, color-and-light-without-form make up this seascape, which is punctuated by rods of black ink, suggesting pilings of a jetty.

Kigel, a master of the Asian brush painting, discovered the medium after a 10-year career in watercolor painting, and traveled to Japan and China to study the delicate art.

Kigel is captivated by the medium’s spontaneity and use of negative space.  Applying Asian brush techniques to the flora and fauna of Maine’s midcoast, she brings a sense of “exotica” to familiar scenes.  In this exhibit, collectors will see Kigel’s radiant paintings of peonies and other flowers from her own gardens. 

Also new this year are Kigel’s small oil paintings of still-life’s, landscapes, and seascapes.
