Portland Maine… Portland Ballet announced a new exhibit in the Art Gallery in the lobby of the Portland Ballet Studio Theater. The work in this exhibit is by local artist Colleen Edwards. Colleen grew up in Louisville, Colorado just outside of Boulder, where she began her artistic training under Cheryl Harmon. Colleen moves between watercolor and acrylic mediums and paints many landscapes as the scenery from her youth was so inspiring. Colleen also has a passion for painting animal portraits and landscapes. Colleen paints watercolor greeting cards and has been commissioned for custom watercolors of private homes. She has a B.F.A from The Boston Conservatory and now resides in Portland, Maine, where she dances with the Portland Ballet Company.

Colleen has two series of works hanging in the gallery. The first features dancers from ballet and flamenco styles. When asked about this series, Colleen states, “Dance is very close to my heart. I have spent just as much time in life creating as a visual artist as I have a performing artist. Dancers are the most captivating subjects and their larger than life passion is mimed on these large canvases.” The second series of images hanging in the gallery are that of aspen trees. This series is painted completely with painting knives. Colleen’s fascination with their natural splendor is evident when she states, “They are a sign of strength and beauty. Aspen groves can cover miles of land, all stemming from one parent tree.” Both of these series are available for sale. Colleen is offering a discount to anyone who shows her a ticket stub from a 2014-2015 Portland Ballet Company performance. See these captivating works and meet the artist during the opening reception on Friday, January 30 from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m.
