New Art in the Capitol Exhibit Now on Display
- March 13, 2015
One of Maine’s most talented contemporary artists, Jeffery Becton’s work utilizes familiar visuals from the ocean, the sky, and other natural scapes found in and around Becton’s Deer Isle home and homes of others on the Atlantic coast. He states, “Since 1990 I have worked in the medium that I call digital montage—a seamless union of diverse visual elements in a composition, the original form of which is a digital file.”
His work reflects a surrealist style and leaves the audience in wonderment of possible narratives to fit the constructed moment in time. Poetic and illusory his work combines “…primarily elements of photography as well as painting, drawing, and scanned materials, the techniques I use foster and give form to visual ambiguities, reexamining the boundaries of mixed media and creating altered realities that merge into images rich in symbolism both personal and archetypal.” (jefferybecton.com)
Originally from New Jersey, Becton studied history during his undergrad at Yale. He later received an MFA in graphic design from the Yale School of Art (now Yale School of Art and Architecture) and has exhibited in group shows throughout New England and New York State. His credits include juried into eleven annual and biennial shows at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art and three Portland Museum of Art Biennials. Jeffery Becton’s work is in five museum collections, including the Portland Museum of Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art. He regularly shows his work at The Turtle Gallery in Deer Isle, Elizabeth Moss Galleries in Falmouth, and Courthouse Gallery Fine Art in Ellsworth.
