Still Lives: Curious Observations
- July 14, 2015
During the month of August, Win Wilder Hall will host a collaborative installation of drawings, objects and photographs by Maine-based artists Sarah Bodine and Elise Wright. In this exhibition, the artists survey ideas of preservation, juxtaposition and reconstruction of the natural world.
“Our interests coincide with the age-old act of collecting and recording, the unique human capacity for curiosity and wonder – at times, a morbid fascination – and the visual language of nostalgia. Through documentation, we observe how objects may be contrived to fit cultural perception, and, in so doing, may blur the boundaries between what’s real and what’s manipulated.”
A limited-edition handmade catalog for the exhibition will be available.
About the artists:
Sarah Bodine is a book artist, producing her own short-run volumes, as well as collaborations with other artists. Sarah came from a family that celebrated and collected nature: her grandmother was a Modernist painter who raised hundreds of parakeets in her basement and kept peacocks in the garden, while her mother collected ashtrays made of iridescent butterfly wings under glass.
Elise Wright started her career as a photographer at the age of 8 with a Kodak Instamatic 104 given to her by her grandfather. Then began the habit of photographing everything – family, landscape and interiors – as a way to document how we organize our world, natural and man-made. Her studio is everywhere.
