Evangeline: A Modern Tale of Acadia Gallery Reception
- Date: December 8, 2016
- Location: PhoPa Gallery, Portland
Evangeline: A Modern Tale of Acadia features photographs by Mark Marchesi. This project is inspired by HW Longfellow’s epic poem Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie. First published in 1847, the piece tells a tragic story about the expulsion of early French settlers in the mid 1700s from the territory that later became Nova Scotia. Mark took an interest in the poem and began photographing the Annapolis Valley in 2012. Today, much of the rural Western Shore is again declining in population. The abandoned properties, vacant ports and primordial landscapes in his photos represent his own modern tale of Acadia. Mark is publishing a photographic book that will be released in conjunction with the exhibition.
