INSIDE/OUT features photographs of quiet interior spaces that reference the exterior world through their use of light, color, language, and objects. Jeffery Becton composes ambiguous spaces through his digital montages in which landscapes and interiors exist as one. Thomas Birtwistle’s photographs show the deserted Maine State Prison in Thomaston just after it closed in 2002. Sarah Szwajkos captures home interiors that reveal hints of human presence. Together these images—views through open windows and doors, still-life studies of shoes and nautical charts, and passageways out of prison—bring the outside world in and the inside out.
