Shango Afro-beat Orchestra returns to The Dance Hall on Friday, March 6 at 8:00 p.m. The ever popular band pays tribute to the music of Nigeria's Fela Kuti, and as a staple at the Hall, has become a hit of the Seacoast music scene. Fela was such an outsize figure it takes four members of Shango (Jonny Peiffer as bandleader, Stu Diaz as vocalist, Matt Langley on tenor saxophone, and Mike Effenberger on keys) to even come close to pulling off what Fela himself was able to do. With horn players, guitars, keyboards, percussion, singers and dancers, Shango is nearly 20 members strong.

"People want to dance. People have proven they resoundingly approve that a band this size exists and is playing music that will force them to shake their thing on the dance floor for nearly three straight hours..." Jonny Peiffer, arranger and bandleader

On Saturday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. another regular on The Dance Hall calendar, Portland's Primo Cubano, takes the floor playing traditional Cuban dance music dating back to the turn of the 20th Century. "Son" is the most popular style to come out of Cuba and is the primary contributor to the blend of Latin styles today known as Salsa. It was first a music of the country people and eventually migrated to Havana, where it was urbanized and began to draw a wider audience.

"It's going to be a wild weekend. Both bands are so powerful, and whether people are sitting and listening or jumping up and dancing, there is always a sense of joy in the room. The positive energy is infectious!" Drika Overton, director of The Dance Hall.

Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door and can be purchased online at www.thedancehallkittery.org and brownpapertickets.com. The box office opens 90 minutes before the each show.

Those who purchase tickets for both events will be entered into a raffle for a season's pass for all upcoming 2015 events at The Dance Hall.
