Dawn Potter
This artist is an Education Artist.
Dawn is the associate director of the Frost Place Conference for Poetry and Teaching. Her poetry workshops help students and teachers recognize that reading and discussing a variety of poems can inspire their own poetry and increase their understanding of revision and analysis. She works with K-12 students as well as adult writers and has been a guest artist at Falmouth High School, Cape Elizabeth High School, Madison Middle School, and Roger Williams University, among many other schools. In addition, she has taught classes for Haystack, the Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance, and the Solstice MFA program at Pine Manor College.
In 2009 Dawn won a major writing grant from the Elizabeth George Foundation. Her most recent book is a memoir, "Tracing Paradise: Two Years in Harmony with John Milton" ( University of Massachusetts Press, 2009; see the description at http://www.umass.edu/umpress/spr_09/potter.htm). She is also the author of two collections of poetry, "Boy Land and Other Poems" (Deerbrook Editions, 2004) and "How the Crimes Happened" (CavanKerry Press, 2010). Her poems and essays have appeared in the Sewanee Review, the Threepenny Review, Prairie Schooner, and many other journals. She is a member of the Beloit Poetry Journal's editorial board and served as a judge for Maine's 2007 and 2009 Poetry Out Loud competitions.
She lives in Harmony with photographer Thomas Birtwistle and their two sons.
