Parish Maps: Building a Sense of Place through the Work of Common Ground

Sue Clifford, co-founder of Common Ground in England, will be in Eastport for a weeklong residency and exhibition at the Tides Institute and Museum of Art. Distinguished by linking nature with culture, Common Ground helps residents highlight the unique elements of their localities as a starting point for action to improve the quality of everyday places.
The panel discussion on public art, “Public Art and Sense of Place,” will take place at 7pm on Thursday evening, August 13, at the Band/ Music Room, Shead High School, 89 High Street, Eastport, Maine.
The panel for this discussion will include Sue Clifford; noted art critic, Lucy Lippard; well-known British walking artist Hamish Fulton; and Ron Shuebrook, past president of the Ontario College of Art and Design. Community Parish maps created in England will be on display.
Ms. Clifford will also be conducting a weeklong residency that will allow local communities to learn the basics of parish maps. Five workshops in different communities throughout the region will be offered during the week of August 9-15.
The workshops will be at the following locations:
- Lubec: 2 pm, Sunday, August 9, at Lubec Library
- Calais: 7 pm, Monday, August 10, at the Holmestead
- St. Andrews, New Brunswick: 7 pm, Tuesday, August 11, at Kingsbrae Gardens
- Pembroke: 1 pm, Wednesday, August 12, at Pembroke Elementary
- Dennysville: 7pm, Friday, August 14, at Lincoln Library
