Individual Artist Fellowships Frequently Asked QuestionsMay I use grants funds for continuing education opportunities?Fellowship funds are unrestricted and may be used for anything; however, there is no program that specifically funds an artist's educational costs. In addition, the Commission does not fund artists under 18 or those who, at the time of the application, are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in the related field. Why are only "creators" allowed to apply for the Fellowship program?Although the Commission respects and honors all artists, the Individual Artist Fellowship program exists to reward original work only. For example, a choreographer may apply rather than a dancer. This distinction is fairly consistent among fellowship programs throughout the country. If I were to win a Fellowship award, would it be considered taxable income?Yes, but the state does not issue a 1099 form. You are responsible fro reporting your award. For further information on tax issues for artists please contact the Maine Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts at 207/871-7033. How should I present my artistic materials? When applying for any of the artist programs, most of your effort should be spent on presenting your artistic materials clearly. A high quality audio or video tape, professionally photographed images in readable jpg, 300 dpi format and a clean manuscript can make all the difference in your success. However, materials should not be presented in elaborate packaging, which will just be discarded. Please send materials in exactly the format requested. For example, a juror may discount prose manuscripts longer than the maximum 20 pages, or miss your work completely if a tape is not cued to the proposed selection. Where do I send my artistic materials?Clearly label your submission with the name of the applicant and email to kathy.shaw@maine.gov or send on a CD Rom to Maine Arts Commission, Kathy Ann Shaw, Senior Development Associate, 25 State House Station, 193 State Street, Augusta, Maine 04333-0025.
