“Poetry is about the power of speech, all writing is—it’s an intense dream and being Maine’s Literary Fellow for 2010 is an intense dream realized. This award will help me propel my book-length poem, My Life as a Doll, published by Autumn House Press in 2008, further into the world, especially within the state and region. The book concerns itself with a mother’s violence, madness and recovery. As such, it’s a survivor’s tale, one intended to give hope to others. Reaching a greater audience is a critical, perhaps redemptive act, as writing is for me. Furthermore, the financial support the award so generously supplies, will enable me to complete a prose memoir, tentatively titled Walking With Winter. Being Maine’s Literary Fellow is a considerable honor, one that I do not take lightly. My commitment is to be a good steward of the gift by giving back to the larger community we call this good earth in whatever ways I can.”
