PERCENT FOR ART COMPETITION PROSPECTUS:

University of Maine Hutchinson Center, Belfast Maine

Overview

The Maine Arts Commission is making a call to all artists living in Maine to submit proposals to design, create, and install artwork at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center, Percent for Art site in Belfast Maine. Total project budget is $17,000, submissions deadline is March 13, 2008.

The Percent for Art law in Maine reserves one percent of the construction funds for all state-funded building projects to provide artwork for the public areas of these buildings.

Background

University of Maine is adding an addition to the Hutchinson Center facility in Belfast. This expansion will add more class rooms, science labs, and a large conference area to the building. The Hutchinson Center is named after University of Maine President Frederick E. Hutchinson, who was President from 1992-1997. The school provides undergraduate, graduate and professional development education, as well as cultural opportunities, to the people of the region. It hosts a senior college as well as offers a place for conferences, community meetings and networking gatherings. The campus is used year-round by a diverse population for a range of purposes.

The committee is looking to commission exterior artwork that would encourage gathering. The piece should consider how it will invite people to congregate though all seasons and in a variety of weather conditions.

The committee has assessed the site and has chosen any or all of the following potential areas to be addressed:

From the edge of the parking lot to the main entry doors, including areas on either side of the doors and areas on either side of the pathway for about 20'.

Materials and design ideas for exterior pieces should take into consideration the site conditions and harsh winter climate. If you have specific questions about architectural elements, the architect representative for this project is David Zatopek, who can be contacted at david.zatopek@corgan.com. If you wish to visit the site in-person, you can make an appointment through Dr. C. Sue McCullough, Sue_McCullough@umit.maine.edu , (207-338-8004). Other questions can be directed to Kerstin Gilg at the Maine Arts Commission kerstin.gilg@maine.gov.
