The Maine Arts Commission Extends Proposal Deadline for $55,000 Art Competition at the Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor

The Maine Arts Commission is making a call to Maine artists to submit proposals to design, create and install artwork at the Eastern Maine Community College (EMCC) Campus, Percent for Art site in Bangor, Maine. The project has a budget of $55,000 and a deadline for submissions has been extended to August 7, 2009 to account for slight changes to the proposal.

The campus of EMCC includes four buildings, which house classrooms, labs and shop spaces. There are also two residence halls, Johnston Gymnasium, and the Campus Center. The college offers 31 program options, with one-year certificates, two-year diplomas and associate degrees. EMCC campus. EMCC prepares technicians and skilled workers for careers in mechanical, engineering and construction industries, allied health professionals and business occupations. Approximate enrollment is 1100 full time and 856 part-time students.

To enliven the campus, for students and visitors, and be an area of visual focus for the college, the Percent for Art selection committee is interested in having a single artist or team of artists create artwork. The committee is interested in bringing a sense of unity to the new and renovated buildings.

The reconfiguration and additions on campus are a multi-element construction project. Therefore, with the exception of the quad, there are numerous options for the placement of art works. There is a corridor that includes buildings, new sidewalks, benches and lighting that extends from the parking lot along the south side of the quad to the west end of the campus and, for instance, art could be installed in spaces between the buildings. The selection committee is interested in a series of artworks or a work of art with multiple elements that could extend from the new entry on the east corner of campus to the center of campus. Their hope is to have an art work that physically and aesthetically unifies the campus as well as encourages viewers to seek out and discover different variations/characteristics in the works.

EMCC has chosen to employ significant environmentally and socially conscious building practices for the entire campus. It is requested that artists choose materials and practices that reflect those same commitments. Consideration of the harsh winter weather and significant snow is important as is overall safety and little or no maintenance.

If you have specific questions about architectural elements, the architect representative for this project is Ray Bolduc, who can be contacted at ray.bolduc@wbrcae.com. The site may be visited at any time, please contact the office of Joyce B Hedlund if you wish to schedule your visit (207-974-4691, jhedlund@emcc.edu). Other questions can be directed to Alison Ferris at the Maine Arts Commission alison.ferris@maine.gov.
