Brunswick-Everyone is invited to an "art free for all" on Saturday, September 26 from 10a.m. - 4p.m.on the Brunswick Town Mall for the 13th annual Family Arts Festival. Artists, musicians, dancers and craftspeople will perform, teach and demonstrate their art all across the mall: under tents, on the lawn and at the gazebo. This year a new Narrative Stage will be part of the festival. The Narrative Stage and a sound recording booth will allow the public to listen to and capture stories of their communities and families as part of the Story Bank Maine Project. The festival is free; it is sponsored by Five Rivers Arts Alliance with support from Festival Sponsor Centerline Construction, with additional funding from the Senter Fund, Nathaniel Davis Fund, the Maine Arts Commission, donors and members.

The festival starts off at 10am with a Beatles review by The Apple Scruffs, followed by Bath Municipal Concert Band. You?ll see performances by Gemini Dancers and Shotakan Karate and other favorite performers. More than fifty local artists and organizations participate this year. Art workshops for all ages run from 10a.m. to 4p.m.

There is something for everyone, including an "Assemblage Workshop" led by sculptor Blake Hendrickson, "Make your Own Button" by creating an image to wear close to your heart, create an "Creature Puppet" for a spring parade at the combined Spindleworks and Arts Are Elementary workshop. Meet Kelly Corbett's sheep and learn to spin and dye their wool. Curtis Library's Cornerstones of Science program will offer a "Story Hour" all day, along with several simple craft projects and ice cream making! Capture the coast with oil pastels. Learn to collage in the style of Eric Carle, sit for a "Lightning Portrait" with Charlotte Agell. Get up to your elbows in clay, felting, twig constructions, collage and more! Or just sit back and enjoy the creation all around you.

The Family Arts Festival's "Narrative Stage" will capture place-based stories of artists, traditional craftspeople, and festivalgoers. The stage opens at 11a.m. with a live interview of former lighthouse keeper Ernest DeRaps. DeRaps' career included stints at lights on Monhegan, Vinalhaven and at Fort Point Lighthouse on Penobscot Bay. Festival attendees are invited to record their own stories privately in a portable sound booth set up at the festival. The Narrative Stage is sponsored by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission.

These are just a few of opportunities at the daylong Family Arts Festival on Saturday, September 26 on the Brunswick Town Mall, between Maine St. and Park Row. In case of a storm, rain site will be Brunswick Jr. High School Gym, Columbia Ave, Brunswick.
