PERCENT FOR ART COMPETITION PROSPECTUS:
OVERVIEW:
Aubert Hall, University of Maine, Orono
The Maine Arts Commission is making a call to all artists living in New England and New York State to submit proposals to design, create and install artwork at Aubert Hall University of Maine in Orono, Maine, Special consideration will be given to Maine artists. Total project budget is $34,000, submission deadline is December 18, 2009.
The Percent for Art law in Maine reserves one percent of the construction funds for all state-funded building projects to provide art work for the public areas of these buildings and /or their exterior renovations and additions.
BACKGROUND:
A 2007 State bond funded renovations to second and third floor Chemistry labs and a fourth floor Marine Sciences lab. In addition, the original historic core of Aubert Hall, constructed in 1914, underwent facade improvements, including window replacements.
The committee solicits proposals for three-dimensional artwork that would be placed in one of the following two locations:
Between the west facade of the 1914 portion of the building and Munson Road; or
Between the east facade of Aubert Hall (comprising the east sides of the 1940 and 1958 additions) and the campus North Mall.
It should be noted that in the east wing of the 1958 addition (the center third of the east facade) is a Percent for Art work installed in 2007 and funded through state bond-funded renovations to interior spaces that took place in 2001 - 2002. Jazz Composition for Dimitri Mendeleyev is by Jim Hirschfied and Sonya Ishii. The work is configured in a grid inspired by that of the Periodic Table of the Elements made up of historic pictures of the University and its inhabitants over the years. The work can be seen on the Maine Art Commission's Web site: http://mainearts.maine.gov/public/percent/site.asp?ID=385
