Eligibility
Any Maine Poet who:
- has a valid Maine address and has resides full-time in Maine for a minimum of two years at the date of nomination, and
- is 18 years of age or older at the time of the nomination, and
- has published poetry
Review Process
The directors of the Maine Arts Commission and Maine State Library will assemble a committee consisting of experts in the field to review nominations. The panel's recommendations will be delivered to the Governor of Maine for final approval.
Required Application Materials
- Five copies of the poet's most recently published work (if submitting in hard copy) or one digital copy in PDF, RTF or Word format if submitting digitally. When submitting digitally, please adhere to the following naming convention:
lastname_firstname_TitleofPublication.rtf (example: shaw_kathy_MaineArtsMagazine.rtf).
- Three unique letters of recommendation, either hard copy or digital copy. When submitting digitally, please number the letters of recommendation and include the name of the poet being nominated. (Example: EdgarAllanPoe_1.pdf.)
- Resume of poet being nominated
Nominations may be self-generated. Please do not submit work in elaborate file folders or packaging. Make copies of all application materials for your records prior to submitting them. All materials must be legible in 12-point or larger type.
How to Apply
Nominations can be submitted via e-mail or through hard copy.
E-mail submissions must contain the required documents appropriately labeled and attached to the e-mail. The file size of the e-mail should not be larger than 8MB in total. Please place "Poet Laureate Nomination" in the subject line of your e-mail and send to Angela.A.Molino@maine.gov
