Madawaska Historical Society
Grant: $1,400This grant supports the construction of an Acadian loom and the subsequent recreation of authentic Acadian textiles for the Acadian World Congress. The Madawaska Historical Society proposed the construction of an exact copy of an existing early 19th Century Acadian loom in order to reproduce the process for making historically accurate textile products. The project involved copying a loom currently on display in the Albert Homestead located at the Madawaska Historical Society’s Museum and Acadian Cross Site. With ongoing assistance from local weavers, the duplicate loom will be set up to make textiles such as homespun woolen and linen cloth, and more importantly, ‘catalonge’ blankets for display at the upcoming 2014 Acadian World Congress. The Madawaska Historical Society is using its resources to emphasize local historical crafts, skills and handiwork, as well as providing knowledge of the St. John Valley’s unique history.
