What makes a good board member? How do board members work effectively with each other and with their executive director?
To help answer these and other questions, the Maine Arts Commission is presenting a series of seven workshops across the state that will focus on board development and leadership. The workshops are intended for board chairs, emerging board leaders and executive directors.
Conducting the workshops will be Tony Scucci, a senior governance consultant with BoardSource. Tony will focus on strengthening leadership, effectiveness and communication between board chairs, board leaders and executive directors. This session will address all aspects of nonprofit governance.

Board Development
The board development workshops will be held at the following times and locations:
- September 8, St. Lawrence Arts Center, Portland
- September 9, Western Maine Art Group, (Matolscy Gallery), Norway
- October 19, University of Maine Museum of Art, Bangor
- October 26, University of Maine, Presque Isle
- October 27, Waterfall Arts Center, Belfast
These workshops will target board members and executive directors; they will focus on:
- Increasing the board’s understanding of its duties, roles and responsibilities
- Strengthening the board/executive director partnership
- Clarifying mutual expectations
- Developing specific strategies to increase governance effectiveness
Participants will receive a governance toolkit and other resource material to help them work more effectively.
Leadership Training
Leadership training sessions will be held at the following times and locations:
These workshops will target board leaders, emerging leaders, and executive directors; they will focus on:
- Maximizing the potential benefits of the board leader/executive director partnership
- Clarifying mutual expectations between board leaders and staff
- Gaining a greater understanding of each participant’s own leadership qualities and styles
- Gaining a deeper understanding of the five core leadership competencies
These workshops are funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and are free to attend. The training that you will receive constitutes a valuable opportunity that will have a lasting impact on the effectiveness of your cultural nonprofit.

Morning session: 9am - noon
Lunch: Noon - 1pm (Lunch will be provided.)
Afternoon session: 1pm - 4pm
