Arts and Humanities Recipients
Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens

Coastal Maine Botanical GardensGrant: $500This grant will support Rachel Carson: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Silent Spring. In this exhibit, cosponsored by Maine Audubon, Rachel Carson's life is remembered through interpretive panels, artwork and photographs. The central theme is Rachel Carson, the influence of her Maine residency in her work, and the legacy of Silent Spring today. The program will include displays of Rachel Carson’s books with excerpts from her writings and a screening of the video: American Experience-Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring as well as interpretive panels documenting the impact of Rachel Carson’s writings on the environmental movement in America. This project is a capstone experience for a much larger year-long celebration of bird and plant interactions. These feature many arts and humanities themes, ranging from bird photography, painting and sculpture, to the impact of loss of plant and animal diversity on the human condition.
