ARTS & CULTURAL ALLIANCE OF FREEPORT HOSTS TEEN WRITING WORKSHOP
Imagining Fairy Villages, Elves, Trolls, Gnomes, and Other Forest Creatures
Freeport, ME, July 16, 2021 – Arts & Cultural Alliance of Freeport (ACAF) is sponsoring a free writing workshop for teens aged 13 to 18 years. This workshop invites participants to rediscover a time when the forest was alive with magical creatures. Writers are encouraged to explore the forest, imagine the hidden lives of the fantastical creatures that live there, and share their stories through creative writing. The workshop will be guided by author Jefferson Navicky and will take place from 11 am to 2 pm on August 2nd in Jackman Woods in Freeport. Registration for this free event is first come, first serve and limited to 10 participants.
”ACAF is very excited to resume our live and in-person programs for kids in the Tri Town area,” says Evan Haynes, Chairperson of ACAF’s School and Youth focus group. “For three years now, we have run workshops ranging from clown and juggling skills, to map making and concocting fantastic ugly sweaters. These creative gatherings are focused on providing new opportunities for young people but they also give adults a chance to share their passions and skills. Jefferson will help kids articulate the magic they feel in the Maine woods.”
Jefferson Navicky is the author of Antique Densities: Modern Parables & Other Experiments in Short Prose, as well as the story collection, The Paper Coast, and the poetic novel, The Book of Transparencies. He is the archivist for the Maine Women Writers Collection and, together with his wife, founded the Freeport Writers Workshop. Jefferson lives in Freeport where he often walks in the forest and imagines its secret lives. “It’s my hope that the workshop will be a place of permission to write about the enchanted world.”
This workshop, which is made possible by the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust, is part of ACAF’s mission to provide opportunities for artists to explore their creative instincts. ACAF supports artists and arts organizations with a creative network, ongoing programs, professional development opportunities, promotion, and a prominent new venue, Meetinghouse Arts.
