The foundation will be a sanctuary where artists, architects, critics and scholars focused on the visual arts can create, experiment, develop and learn, inspired by the beauty of the Maine coast and creative isolation that Surf Point makes possible. It will be a community of ideas, where exchange of ideas and criticism among peers spurs growth of capacities and skills. It will also be a place where artists share their work with the public in Maine, as a signal of the foundation’s commitment to its role in the state.
Located in York, Maine on 46 acres on the rocky windswept coast of the open ocean, it will occupy two large homes, planned to be repurposed as artists’/writers’ studios.
The director of the foundation will serve as the executive officer of the foundation with the responsibility to realize the mission of the foundation. In collaboration with the board, the director will translate the mission into practical reality. To support the activities of the foundation, the director will solicit financial support for the purposes of the foundation, from individuals, foundations, corporations, and governmental entities, providing a major fraction of the foundation’s annual operating expenses. The director will be the principal public voice of the foundation, broadening public awareness in the arts communities of the nation, particularly New England, among artists, scholars, and critics, among donors and among the broader public whose lives are enriched by the arts. The director will manage the financial, administrative and human resources of the foundation as well as the physical plant. The director will establish processes for soliciting nominations/applications for residency and processes for their evaluation. The director will create and maintain the cultural environment of Surf Point, establishing a sense of excellence and seriousness of purpose, of support for the artists and their work, assuring a respectful community as well as individual contributions to it. The director will support the progress of the residents as they realize their stated artistic goals and will assure that the products of their residencies are shared with the public. In support of the board, the director will carry out their policies and directives and will report regularly to them about financial and administrative issues, the accomplishments of the residents during their stays, and progress to identify new residents.
The director will bring a powerful vision, strong and proven leadership skills, and demonstrated experience in fund-raising, communications, public relations and marketing. The director will bring a record of stewardship of financial, administrative and human resources and daily management of those resources. A demonstrated record of engagement in the visual arts and the people and processes of their creation and analysis is essential.
