Heather Newton Brown Exhibits at Richard Boyd Art Gallery

  • October 26, 2021

Richard Boyd Art Gallery welcomes Heather Newton Brown to the group of artists represented by the gallery in southern Maine.  Heather is a gifted visual artist drawing inspiration from the combination of forms, unexpected materials, and processes.  Inspired by the intersection of the personal and transpersonal, physical and etheric, she uses encaustic, mixed media, mineral pigments, and found items in her art.

Stop in the gallery to see several of her original encaustic paintings on exhibit in the annual ‘Serenity’ exhibition opening November 5th at 10:00 a.m.

About the Artist

Heather Newton Brown is a Maine-raised visual artist currently living in Casco with her family.  Heather identifies as an “outsider artist,” who is largely self-taught, with instruction from local master-painter Pat Chandler and guidance from advisors at Goddard College, where she received her Bachelors of Arts. She also holds a Master's Degree in Counseling from Union Institute and University.

As a young person, Heather was nearly always making things or taking them apart. In the studio, she strives to continue exploring the balance between deconstruction and construction, believing that art is the point when alchemy, inspiration, and vision collide.  She is drawn to incorporating new and unexpected materials, makes her own paints, and is most energized when the strange starts feeling familiar and the familiar starts feeling strange.  She believes art is alchemy.  From the combination of forms, materials, and processes, something new is synthesized.

In her work, Heather explores layers of physical and psychic material, natural forms, and elemental influences. Inspired by the intersection of the personal and transpersonal, physical and etheric, she uses encaustic, mixed media, mineral pigments, and found items.

When not painting, Heather works as a psychotherapist.  When not working, she enjoys spending time with her 4-legged and human companions, volunteering, nature pursuits, and scrounging around for scrap metal to rust, burn, and incorporate into her next painting.

Heather’s paintings are exhibited regionally and part of numerous private collections.
