The Altered-Exhibit

How Augmented-Reality, X Reality, and Virtual Reality Can Enhance the Museum Experience

An Online Workshop

We'll demonstrate how the use of Augmented and Virtual Reality technologies can enhance the museum experience, making exhibits more interactive and immersive. Participants will learn how AR and XR technologies can be integrated into already existing exhibits and how they can be used to attract and educate visitors.

We will specifically talk about using Photogrammetry and 3D modeling to enhance existing or new exhibits, Altered-Reality Models being used to help visualize historical narratives, and the use of Virtual Reality for fully immersive exhibits.

We will talk about the different technologies needed to make these projects, which most small to mid-sized museums already have! They include digital SLR cameras, webcams, and cellphones.

This talk is oriented toward small and mid-sized museums/collections, but it is relevant to large ones as well.

He has a passion for creating immersive and interactive pedagogical experiences. For his University of Maine honors thesis, Ian created Microscopia, a digital museum experience in both VR and AR. The applications centered around photogrammetric models of organisms generated from images captured with a scanning electron microscope, allowing users to shrink down to a microscopic scale. Since completing that project, he has shifted focus from science education to cultural heritage in his current projects.
