The Union of Maine Visual Artists is pleased to host the upcoming group exhibition "Polychroma" at its Portland Chapter Gallery in the Portland Media Center, 516 Congress Street, Portland Maine, February 4 – 27, 2022. "Polychroma" will feature works from Becky Jane Rosen’s recent experimental quilting project, "Matrilineal," alongside a new collaborative video installation by Dani Robbins, Zachary Taibi, and Poorva Singh, "NEST." Works from Becky Jane Rosen’s "Matrilineal" will be on display Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays February 4 – 27. Her work comprises colorful quilted artworks with messages of financial empowerment and personal finance concepts in paint and embroidery, stemming from lessons about money the artist learned from her mother. The works draw on themes of comfort, physical and financial security, and financial literacy. Rosen hopes to use the gentle familiarity of the tradition of quilting to ignite sometimes difficult conversations about money and plant seeds of action. "Matrilineal" was funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. "NEST," a collaboration of choreographer Dani Robbins, projectionist Zachary Taibi, and video and musical artist Poorva Singh, will be on display February 4-6 and February 12-13. "NEST" is a video installation that uses projection, object installation and sound to deliver a haptic audio-visual experience. Layered frames of moving bodies fitted with blocks of color draw the viewer toward a fragmented sensory perception. The piece works to interrupt corporeal logic and stitches together an impossible body. The opening reception is Friday, February 4, 2022, from 5-8pm during the Portland First Friday Art Walk. The exhibition is free to the public and the Portland Media Center facility and gallery is ADA accessible. Artworks in UMVA exhibitions are generally for sale through the artist(s) and a portion of each sale benefits the UMVA. After its opening reception on February 4, "Polychroma" will be on display during UMVA gallery hours from 1-4pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays February 5-27. The gallery adheres to the Portland Media Center’s COVID-19 protocol, which include mandatory masking as well as proof of vaccination, including boosters, for all eligible visitors. The Union of Maine Visual Artists is a collective of artist volunteers. We represent artists statewide in all fields of endeavor and welcome those who support contemporary artists in Maine. The UMVA is dedicated to upholding the dignity of artists while creating positive social change through the arts. By collaborating with other cultural and political organizations, we raise awareness for significant issues while promoting an inclusive arts community in Maine.
