Julia Luft, a painter from Portland, ME, has created a collection of figurative drawings and paintings examining her relationship with labor. The work will be exhibited in her Portland apartment, hosted by her friends and family for a casual evening of art. 'Bodies of Work' investigates personal experiences with manual labor. Inspired by jobs held in farming and food-service, Luft mines her work history and confronts an ambivalence towards the redemptive and non-redemptive aspects of physical work. Loud color palettes, contorted musculature, and symbols of the natural world provide an opaque landscape of questions: Why is brutalizing work a badge of honor?
