Bodies of Work

  • Date: June 11, 2022
  • Location: Russell st, Portland

Julia Luft, a painter from Portland, ME, has created a collection of figurative drawings and paintings examining her relationship with labor. The work will be exhibited in her Portland apartment, hosted by her friends and family for a casual evening of art. 'Bodies of Work' investigates personal experiences with manual labor. Inspired by jobs held in farming and food-service, Luft mines her work history and confronts an ambivalence towards the redemptive and non-redemptive aspects of physical work. Loud color palettes, contorted musculature, and symbols of the natural world provide an opaque landscape of questions: Why is brutalizing work a badge of honor? Who would we have time to be without it? Experience art contextualized in the home of the artist. Share food and drink made by fellow community members. Celebrate the end of your work week in the comfort of good company.
