On Saturday, May 6 at 8 p.m. Lookie Lookie comes to The Dance Hall in Kittery. Boston’s Lookie Lookie is the brainchild of bassist Chris Maclachlan, best known for his work in the seminal Boston punk band Human Sexual Response.

Maclachlan has an abiding love for Latin Bugalu, a crossover genre invented by Newyorican musicians in the 1960s. Incredibly fun and catchy, Bugalu lies somewhere between the stately Cuban sounds of the 50s and the manic high salsa of the 70s. Top artists included Joe Cuba and Ricardo Ray, whose tunes form the backbone of the new band's repertoire.

The band is indeed named for an early Ricardo Ray hit, “Lookie Lookie," which encapsulates some of the pan-American fusion that went into Bugalu. Along with playing, just about everybody in the band sings, in Spanish and English.

Lookie Lookie is a group of fellow musical explorers who have bonded over Latin Bugalu, a melange of styles that includes Afro-Cuban rhythms, mambo, rock and soul. All eight of the members come from other bands, in a variety of styles, but this is one “side project” that captured all of their imaginations. A quick look at the Lookie Lookie roster is intriguing enough.

Bassist Chris MacLachlan is a veteran of the rock bands Human Sexual Response and The Zulus. Percussionist Ken Winokur comes from the Alloy Orchestra, while percussionist Rick Barry, who specializes in timbales, hails from Boston’s Bim Skala Bim. Vocalist and percussionist Vicente Lebron is a veteran of both the Either/Orchestra and Club d’Elf. Percussionist/singer Jorge Arce has worked in the band Raiz de Plena. Trumpeter Scott Getchell is best known for his work with the Bad Art Ensemble, and Lars Vegas. Ted DeColo, on alto sax and flute, plays with the Funky White Honkies soul band. And Russ Gershon, on sax, and vocals, has led the Either/Orchestra for three decades, and also played with the Agachiko band.

“This is some of the most fun music I’ve ever played,” says Gershon. “It has great grooves, the lyrics and feel is very light-hearted, and it gets people dancing like nothing else I’ve seen.”

Tickets are $16 in advance and $20 at the door and can be purchased at TheDanceHallKittery.org and Brownpapertickets.com.
