Elgar    Piano Quintet in A minor, Op. 84  [listen]

Henry Kramer, piano; Gabriela Diaz and Jennifer Elowitch, violins; Melissa Reardon, viola; Brant Taylor, cello

Mendelssohn’s second String Quintet is a wonderfully sophisticated work, both exuberant and wistful, written just two years before the composer’s death at age 38. Clarinetist Ben Fingland, lauded for his “dazzling technique” by the New York Times, performs the last of the fascinating Synchronisms, which combine virtuoso performance with electronic sounds. Rounding out the evening is Elgar’s passionately expansive Piano Quintet, featuring Cape Elizabeth native Henry Kramer at the keyboard.
