The UUCB Concerts for a Cause series welcomes Honest Millie to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick on November 10th at 7:30 pm.

Drawing from years and years of experience in various combinations of musical groups, New Hampshire-based Honest Millie promises an entertaining show of music from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. This 6-piece swing jazz band brings you stellar 3-part harmonies and strong instrumentation (upright bass, piano, sax/clarinet, violin, guitar, and drums). For this concert they will be playing songs from the Delta Rhythm Boys, the Ink Spots, the Boswell Sisters, Nina Simone, Louis Jordan, and Peggy Lee, just to name a few.

  • Fiddle: Ellen Carlson is a well-respected teacher and organizer of the NH Fiddle Ensemble and Fiddleheads Jam Camp, Ellen has taught at workshops and festivals throughout New England and New York. She was an original member with the NH based folk/swing trio Sweet, Hot & Sassy.
  • Upright Bass: Val Blachly has performed professionally since the early 70's with several bluegrass and folk bands. She is also the founding member of the swing ensemble Sweet, Hot and Sassy. Currently she performs with the Mink Hills Band, a creative, wide ranging, bluegrass/swing group.
  • Keyboard: Agnes Charlesworth studied composition and electronic music at the Center for Contemporary Music in Oakland, CA and went on to work in sound design for film, video, and performance in the Bay Area. Now living in Maine, she has created original scores and soundscapes for many local arts organizations.
  • Tenor Sax: In the late 90’s Lee Ann Ames played with the Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra in the East Village, playing the Cape May Jazz Fest with Joe Chambers and sitting in with Mo Guajiro. After spending some time in Puerto Rico playing in plena, salsa and jazz ensembles, she moved to New Hampshire and was a member of the Lakes Region Big Band for several years. In 2007 she began performing with the all-female swing group, Swing a Cat, on sax and clarinet.
  • Guitar: At one time or another, Jim Pendergast has performed as a sideman with almost every Grand Ole Opry star, and recorded with many of the legendary Nashville studio musicians. More recently, his attention has turned to Celtic and Irish music, a return to the folk music that captured his attention in the 1960s. For seven years, he was the leader of the Boys of County Nashville, the featured band at the world-famous Opryland Hotel.
  • Drums: In the late 70's Paul Wolf was known as one of the premiere washboard players in the country. He has played washboard in a variety of bluegrass and Cajun bands, and even shared the stage with such notables as Pete Seeger, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglass, and Leroy Troy. During that time he also played the drums in several Western Mass bands. Since he moved to New Hampshire in the mid 80s, Paul has played in many Portsmouth-area and Massachussetts bands of varying genres.
