UNTAMED

Featuring photographs by Jaime Johnson

Exhibition On View: June 28 - July 22

Exhibition Preview: Tuesday, June 27, 6:00 - 7:30pm

This exhibition will feature Mississippi-based artist Jaime Johnson’s new photographic series, Untamed. Set in the swamps and woods of Mississippi, Untamed explores the dichotomies of life and death, growth and decay, and chronicles the intimate relationship of a feral woman and her surrounding environment. Referencing traditionally Southern and feminine tropes,Untamed highlights our mortality and rewrites the image of the Southern woman. The traditional and simple cyanotype process mirrors the series’ interest in a return to nature and focuses the viewer on pattern and texture. The images are printed on fragile Japanese Kitakata paper which too suggests inevitable deterioration. Untamed ultimately reflects upon the forms, impermanence, and interconnectedness of natural life.

Johnson was born in Slidell, Louisiana in 1988. A Maine Media alum, she has returned 3 times to intern, TA, and teach in the photo program. In 2015, Johnson won the Grand Prize in Maine Media Workshops’ international competition Character: Portraits and Stories that Reveal the Human Condition. Her work is represented by SEITIES gallery in Calgary, Canada.
