 Deering High School Student Allan Monga named Maine Poetry Out Loud State Champion

Lauren Dodge, a senior at Lee Academy is runner up

 

AUGUSTA, ME-- The Maine Arts Commission named Allan Monga, a junior representing Deering High School, the Maine Poetry Out Loud State Finalist. Monga won the statewide high school competition in three rounds of recitations on March 20. Lauren Dodge, a senior from Lee Academy School, was the runner-up.

The Maine Arts Commission organizes the poetry recitation contest in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. The state finals were hosted at the Waterville Opera House and broadcast live by Boothbay Region Television. Jennifer Rooks, public affairs host and producer at Maine Public Broadcasting Network was the master of ceremonies. The event featured music from the Waterville Senior High School Jazz Band and readings by Adrian Blevins, a published author and educator at Colby College.

The other state finalists included: Abigale vanLuling, Gorham High School; Hannah Lavenson, Messalonskee High School; Lauren Farmer, Rangeley Lakes Regional School; Emma Lombardo, Westbrook High School; Nelson Peterson, Oak Hill High School; Lydia Caron,Bangor High School; Wyatt Bates, Yarmouth High School; Richard Hilscher, North Yarmouth Academy, and Katharine Kemper, Camden HillsRegional High School.
