Waterfall Arts, a busy community art center in Belfast, Maine, seeks an immediate part-time Arts Educator to join its creative staff and run their new AR Girls program, aiming to open new pathways and connections for creative teens in the community. The AR Girls is a partnership between the Maine Math and Science Alliance (MMSA) and Waterfall Arts, funded by the National Science Foundation.  The project is intended to support teen girls to develop new communication skills related to science and technology-infused communication tools (i.e. augmented reality software) through a holistic support system tapping their inherent creativity and interest in art. This position will work with a team of educators and collaborators at Waterfall Arts, MMSA, and its partners to design and implement the AR Girls program. After a training period this first summer, this person will be responsible for Waterfall Art’s AR Girls project management, planning, outreach and evaluation.

Job duties include:

  • Shadowing MMSA AR Girls project manager in the first year

  • Leading AR Girls activities at Waterfall Arts in the second year

  • Participation in the design of all project activities in partnership with the MMSA AR Girls project manager and project partners

  • Team-teaching a 2-week summer workshop and afterschool program with project partners, including MMSA

  • Maintaining relationships with MMSA and other partners throughout the year

  • Building relationships with and among AR Girls participants throughout the year

  • Regular internal communication about the program and its integration with overall WA activities

  • Development and maintenance of relationships with area teen-serving organizations

  • Leading recruitment efforts for each upcoming summer session

  • Learning and championing Waterfall Arts’ mission and education philosophy

  • Participation in training other arts educators in Maine to lead their own AR Girls Program

  • Professionally representing the project and organization in public

The Arts Educator will:

  • have at least three years of experience working creatively with teenage girls (ages 12-16), leading them in engaging and successful art education experiences, which could be analog and/or digital artwork

  • be tech-savvy and have experience/interest in digital and media arts, with a creative and personal openness to learning new technological skills

  • enjoy working in a collaborative learning environment, both in and out of the classroom

  • have excellent communication and empathy skills

  • have strong organizational and project management skills

  • love creating artwork and working with youth

  • be a self-organized, responsible and responsive team player

  • have experience in creative curriculum development and classroom management, while  respecting all social backgrounds and conditions of learning

  • have familiarity with promotion, outreach and recruitment activities

The ideal candidate would have a degree in arts education, or a BFA with teaching experience, or an education degree with an artmaking practice, or at least 5 years of experience teaching art to young people.  Awareness of community arts programming or creative digital media a plus.

This part-time position requires a flexible schedule, with hours ranging from 2-3 hours per week in winter, 8-10 hours per week in fall and spring, and full-time at least during the two week summer workshop scheduled for Aug. 6-10 and 13-17, 2018. Much of the work can be done remotely. Hours for 2019 will be similar, TBD.

Please send digital resume and cover letter to info@waterfallarts.org.  Applications will be acknowledged upon receipt but please no phone calls.  The position is open until filled. The goal is to integrate a person into the post as soon as possible but preferably before the end of May, 2018.
