JOB DESCRIPTION:

Maine Arts Commission staff serves artists, organizations, and cultural communities in all regions of the State. We are guided by our mission: The Maine Arts Commission shall encourage and stimulate public interest and participation in the cultural heritage and cultural programs of our state; shall expand the state's cultural resources; and shall encourage and assist freedom of artistic expression for the well-being of the arts, to meet the needs and aspirations of persons in all parts of the state.

The Maine Arts Commission seeks an enthusiastic individual to join us as one of three Directors of Special Projects.  With an emphasis on public art, the position collaborates with staff on communication with the field, program growth, research, funding opportunities and skill development on a wide variety of topics related to the work of the Maine Arts Commission. Directors of Special Projects are a valuable connection to state, regional, and national organizations related to areas of arts and cultural expression.

 

REPRESENTATIVE TASKS:

  • Works conjointly with agency staff on the distribution of funds to grant programs.
  • Cultivates relationships with organizations and individuals in the field.
  • Provides creative leadership and timely and accurate support to the field.
  • Works mutually with the staff and members of the sector to respond to questions, ideas and changes within the field.
  • Works with other staff members to jointly design comprehensive organizational planning, outreach, and ongoing training to meet the needs of the field and mission and goals of the agency.
  • Attends, participates, and represents the agency in meetings, conferences, and workshops, as assigned.
  • Reviews and makes assessments of agency programs and operations to identify potential improvements.
  • Manages public art projects around the State of Maine.

 

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES DESIRED:

  • Possesses excellent written and spoken communication skills and is open to feedback.
  • Recognizes the need for understanding and engagement in issues of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), and the need to ensure that traditionally marginalized voices are lifted and heard.
  • Possesses an understanding of the cultural field.
  • Ability to coordinate and lead assigned projects.
  • Has a friendly, cooperative and supportive attitude toward the public.
  • Willingness to coordinate and facilitate conversations with diverse groups of people effectively.
  • Ability to function effectively and handle multiple high-priority tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to be flexible and have a creative approach to problem-solving.
  • Understands the value and importance of teamwork.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A three (3) year combination of education, training, and/or experience in arts administration and/or management.

BENEFITS

The bi-weekly dollar values of some State-paid benefits for full-time employees include: $14.60 for dental insurance; 17.96% of employee’s pay towards retirement; and, depending on the employee’s annual pay, at least 85% ($412.23) of health insurance premiums (more information is available here). Participation in the Health Premium Credit Program can decrease state-paid health insurance benefits by 5%.
