Materiality: The Matter of Matter Opens November 11 at CMCA

  • October 11, 2017

The Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA) opens the exhibition, Materiality: The Matter of Matter, on Saturday, November 11, 2017, with a public reception from 5 to 7pm. The exhibition is on view through February 11, 2018. The thematic, group exhibition fills the new CMCA with a lively and diverse selection of work by twelve artists with a connection to the state of Maine.

The question of how and why an artist uses materials has long been a topic of consideration in art history. Today, many artists are looking to this question and seeking to find a balance between what they use to make work and the concepts behind them. Providing agency to the materials themselves, artists are looking at materials as a means of communication, whether they are expanding on traditional media and narratives or utilizing everyday objects to construct new forms. Exploring these concerns in their work, the artists included in the exhibition, are also considering why they choose to work with certain matter in our current material culture and social climate, and the role that these materials play within it.

Artists included in the exhibition are: Jackie Brown, Stephanie Cardon, Lisa Kellner, Adam Lampton, Jonathan Mess, Loretta Park, Gelah Penn, Ben Potter, Shannon Rankin, Emilie Stark-Menneg, Aaron T Stephan, and Ian Trask.

The exhibition features a wide variety of exciting new work, including paintings, sculpture, installation, and video. "Last year at this time, we held our inaugural Biennial here in the new building, showcasing the work of twenty-five artists, which spoke to the diversity and scale of work being made in the state," says Associate Curator Bethany Engstrom, who curated the Materiality exhibition. "We are taking the opportunity again this year to work with a number of artists to highlight what is happening in contemporary art in Maine now, and in this case, how artists are considering a particular idea that connects them."

A series of Sunday Salon artists talks and performances will accompany the exhibition; visit it cmcanow.org for more information.
