Seeking Full-time Executive Director

Engine, Inc., a nonprofit creative economy organization based in Biddeford Maine, is seeking a new Executive Director (ED) to succeed its founding ED who is leaving the organization after 11 years. Engine’s mission is to connect and inspire our community through art, innovation and education. 

Engine hosts contemporary and community art exhibitions, community events, and youth and adult creative workshops. Engine also houses IGNITE, a startup incubator for design and art-focused businesses, in partnership with UMaine Foster Center of Student Innovation. 

Engine seeks a proven, self-motivated, visionary, community-committed leader with a passion for the arts and creative economy, both in and beyond Maine. The ED must have five to eight years relevant non-profit administration experience working in a field such as arts, arts engagement, or the creative economy.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES. The Executive Director is the keystone for the current and lasting success of Engine. The position reports directly to and is supported by the Board of Directors. The candidate should have demonstrated success in:

Programmatic Direction:  

  • Responsible for the hiring and supervision of staff, including a Program Manager, who will be responsible for the implementation of Engine’s current and future programs.

  • Ensures programs are in alignment with mission and strategic direction.

  • Oversees Volunteer Coordinator and Internship Program.

Board Governance:  Works with the Board in order to fulfill the organization's mission.

  • Leads Engine in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s sustainable mission as defined by the Board of Directors.

  • Communicates effectively with the Board and provides, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.

Financial Performance and Viability: Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization.

  • Responsible for fundraising, grant writing and developing other revenues necessary to support Engine’s vision and mission and its programs.

  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of Engine, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization in connection with Engine’s Treasurer and Finance Committee.

  • Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.

Organization Mission and Strategy: 

  • Works with the Board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, and community outreach.

  • Responsible for guiding and executing the organization’s strategic plan to ensure that Engine can successfully fulfill its mission into the future.

  • Responsible for the enhancement of Engine’s image and brand by overseeing marketing communications.

  • Developing community and strategic partnerships and working collaboratively in the civic, business, and nonprofit community.


  • Oversee and implement appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are supported.

  • Management of facilities including any studio tenancies.

  • Responsible for executing all agreements and other legal instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.


  • Experience working with a Board of Directors or similar type of governing body.

  • Ability to envision, convey, and collaboratively develop the organization’s strategic sustainable future to the Board, staff, volunteers, and interns.

  • Demonstrated work in community engagement.

  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, hire, supervise and collaborate with staff.

  • A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results.

  • Demonstrated fundraising experience and excellent donor relations skills.

  • Demonstrated success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including funders, partner agencies, and community stakeholders.

  • Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation.

  • Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making, and reporting.

  • Personable,diplomatic, creative, tactful, patient with good etiquette and listening skills..

  • Self-motivated, entrepreneurial, catalytic, visionary, with a desire to capitalize on a host of opportunities to facilitate the organization’s growth.

  • Strong written/oral communication skills and public speaking ability.

  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy.


  • Full-time salaried position. Salary commensurate with experience and budget; includes health insurance.

  • Attending evening and weekend events or meetings for Engine programs as required.

  • Working from home, at times, is acceptable.
