UUCB Concerts for a Cause: CHERYL WHEELER

  • February 13, 2019

Folk icon Cheryl Wheeler will bring her beautiful songs & hilarious stories to the Unitarian Universalist Church on March 16, 2019 at 7:30 pm as part of their Concerts for a Cause series which raises money for local charities.

Cheryl Wheeler is a renowned and gifted songwriter with a beautiful voice. If you are not familiar with her, you have probably heard her music. She is very respected as a songwriter by her peers, which can be seen by how many of them record her songs. Cheryl's songs have been covered by artists as diverse as Dan Seals, Peter Paul and Mary, Kenny Loggins, Garth Brooks, Suzy Boggus, Melanie, Bette Midler, Maura O'Connell, Sylvia, Kathy Mattea, and Holly Near. If they think she is great, then you owe it to yourself to learn more if you aren't familiar with her.

It has always seemed as if there were two Cheryl Wheelers. There is poet-Cheryl, writer of some of the prettiest, most alluring and intelligent ballads on the modern folk scene. And there is her evil twin, comic-Cheryl, a savagely funny social critic. The result is a delightful contrast between poet and comic. She will tell a story that has you rolling in the aisles, and then sing a song that leaves you wiping tears from your eyes. She will talk about some serious current event, and then sing a song that will have you howling with laughter. Her entire concert is an emotional roller coaster.

“Cheryl Wheeler is an anomaly on the acoustic music scene. She has a rare gift for writing songs with lush melodies and lyrics of incredible beauty. On the other hand, she is a master of quick wit. Her observational humor has brought us a number of songs describing the utter ridiculousness of the world around us. And then there is the richness of her silky alto telling us what lies in the deepest recesses of her songwriter's heart.” — FAME Magazine

Tickets are $22 in advance, $25 at the door, Students/Children: $10. Available at the church office, Gulf of Maine Books, or online at https://wheeler.brownpapertickets.com/.

Two-thirds of the net proceeds of the 2018-2019 Concerts for a Cause series will be donated to The Brunswick Teen Center and The Gathering Place, a daytime shelter for the homeless.
