In the late 19th- and early 20th centuries, American artists gathered in summer colonies on the east and west coasts of the United States. On the east coast, two New England art colonies separated by hundreds of miles of ocean, Cape Ann, Massachusetts (Gloucester and Rockport) and Monhegan Island, Maine, attracted many of the same artists. Among the significant artists who visited both of these important crossroads in the history of American art were Theresa Bernstein, Eric Hudson, Leon Kroll, Hayley Lever, James Fitzgerald, Lester Stevens, Don Stone, and Stow Wengenroth. This exhibition will pair works created at each colony by these artists, as well as by many others, who visited or lived in both locations. The exhibition will feature paintings that depict aspects of both art colonies and that reflect the differences between the city-size Cape Ann, with its large industrial Gloucester harbor, sizable fishing fleet, and extended Rockport seashore, contrasted by the tiny off-shore island of Monhegan with its smaller harbor and lobster fleet as well as the amazing cliff formations of its eastern headlands. www.monheganmuseum.org
