Berg’s youthful songs combine the two great loves of his adolescence, literature and music, and their expansive longing evokes contemporaries like Mahler and Hugo Wolf. Clarinetist Todd Palmer premiered David Bruce’s Gumboots at Carnegie Hall in 2008, and brings this tenderly joyful work to Portland for the first time. Our 24th season concludes with Dvorak’s elegant String Serenade for twelve performers -- the summer’s largest ensemble for our “grand finale” celebration.
