"SNOW on the MARSH" featured in Down East Magazine
- May 16, 2016
I've been asked: Why did you select "Snow on the Marsh" to submit to the annual "Art of Giving" campaign for non-profits in Maine, hosted by Down East Enterprises, and as displayed in the Down East Magazine, months of June and the 2016 Summer Issue.
I answered as follows:
In 2014 I began a new painting series. My early paintings (2012-14) explored the use of scraped pastels, graphite, and spray paints on hardboard. In 2014 I decided to do a large abstract landscape, seascape series (30) on Stonehenge paper. "Snow on the Marsh" is number 11 in this "Sky, Land and Sea: Maine 2014" series: 30 Mixed Media works, 22X30. All paintings explore Maine's sky, land and sea with the goal of achieving abstract, yet recognizable representations of Maine's sky, land and sea. I was determined not to have any additional elements, such as people, boats, houses, animals, etc., only the land, sea and sky.
I wanted each painting to make someone remark that my paintings contained "mysterious layers of paint, with unpredictable textures, displaying strong contrasting colors, and hold a few surprises when you are least expecting any."
I wanted our natural environment to be at the center of your vision and need, and to ask: "What can I do to help guarantee this fragile environment is maintained and not destroyed by our very human presence?"
