Taiko Drum Workshop with Elaine Fong

Ever have a secret yearning to pound on something other than a table? Here is your chance to break a sweat and bring out the "inner" drummer in you. On Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, The Dance Hall in Kittery will be hosting a Taiko Drum Workshop from 1-4 p.m. with acclaimed drummer Elaine Fong as a part of its Global Rhythms series.
Get a "taste" of taiko (Japanese drums) in this three-hour workshop. At this workshop, you will learn to play taiko with ease using your entire body as well as using your voice to create an energetic and rhythmic flow. Previous percussion experience is welcome.
Taiko is a physical experience; wear loose and comfortable clothing. Elaine Fong is founder and former artistic director of Odaiko New England. Cost: $30 in advance/$35 at door (Note: Enrollment is limited, so it is highly recommended that you register in advance). Elaine Fong is an accomplished taiko (Japanese drums) artist, with over 30 years of experience which includes: being the founder of Odaiko New England, based in Massachusetts); ten years with Soh Daiko in New York; and being a member of the West-Coast based taiko groups Maze Daiko and Kiku Daiko. Ms. Fong has ten years of dance training, and over 20 years of rhythm teaching experience. She has taught taiko workshops throughout the New England area. She has collaborated with choreographers, has composed for film and for the theater. Ms. Fong is a certified Taketina rhythm teacher, advanced level. She has an undergraduate degree from Princeton University, and an MBA from Yale University. Her working career spans the public, private and non-profit sectors.
