About the Artist

James Macdonald is spending his life in play clothes, happily creating in wood. He began professionally in 1981 and now makes electric guitars which feature quite remarkable marquetry and inlay. His instruments are finely crafted with traditional woods using Gibson style construction. He considers his marquetry designs to be a form of storytelling. Wood veneers from around the world are hand cut then detailed with a woodburning pen. Collaborations and custom designs are always welcome. Clients have included the Gibson Custom Shop, Petros Guitars, and Hinckley Yachts. His goal is to make guitars that look, sound, and play great. Macdonald accepts commissions for guitars, furniture, portraits, and artwork featuring marquetry.
