Schoodic Arts for All (SAFA) seeks an exceptional community builder who is passionate about the arts to serve as the next Executive Director of this thriving arts center on the Schoodic Peninsula in Maine. Together with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will carry out the community-building mission of Schoodic Arts for All through leadership and management of programming, outreach and communications, fundraising, facilities, and finances. The Executive Director oversees two year-round employees plus contract and seasonal staff. Salary range is low to mid-$60s, plus benefits.

Schoodic Arts’ mission is to bring artists and community members together to provide year-round cultural events and activities that hold value for our community.Founded in 1998, SAFA serves Downeast residents and visitors by providing a wide range of cultural and arts programming, including the renowned summer Schoodic Arts Festival, and operates three facilities year-round for the public benefit including historic Hammond Hall. Over time, SAFA has developed a welcoming arts infrastructure that houses and promotes ever-evolving programs and activities that support creative expression and invite lifelong appreciation for the arts. 

Candidate Qualifications

  • Outgoing “people-person” who is skilled in connecting with and serving diverse communities. 

  • Passion for visual and performing arts and arts education.

  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills, including public speaking and extensive use of social media. 

  • Experience with development and management of diverse events and arts programming - performance, exhibition, and education with all ages.

  • Relevant management experience; nonprofit management a plus.

  • Team leadership and supervisory skills for working with a board of directors, committees, volunteers, and staff.

  • Effective fundraiser, including direct cultivation and solicitation of donations or grants from individual donors, foundations, and government.

  • Experience or aptitude for financial management including budget development, day-to-day oversight, and regular reporting.

  • Collaborative, patient, flexible, and has a “roll-up-your-sleeves” approach.

  • Tech and digitally-savvy, including arts-oriented AV.

  • Innovative and creative solution-finder.

 

PositionResponsibilities:

Community Building & Arts Programming

  • Engage community members of all ages and backgrounds with encouragement to express themselves and gain lifelong appreciation for the arts and creative spirit.

  • Gain input and work with the community to develop programming and produce inclusive, year-round performances, exhibitions, and arts education.

  • Build relationships with artists of every medium to present diverse programming.

  • Manage the development and execution of all SAFA programs, including scheduling, communications and marketing, volunteer coordination, ticketing, and so on.

  • Foster SAFA as a valuable and integral part of the community of Downeast Maine.

Face of Schoodic Arts for All

  • Maintain and expand SAFA’s role as a community anchor and represent SAFA to its best advantage with state and local governments and by cultivating relationships on behalf of SAFA with all segments of the community.

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for SAFA, and communicate regularly with audiences, donors, program participants, media outlets, town government, email and social media subscribers, fellow arts and community organizations, and the general public.

Fundraising Leadership

  • Serve as the organizer’s lead fundraiser. 

  • Build relationships with current and potential donors to secure major gifts and contributions of all sizes.

  • Cultivate and manage SAFA’s government and foundation grant-seeking operations to systematically secure grants for SAFA’s wide variety of programmatic and operational needs.

Nonprofit Management

  • Manage the organization’s day-to-day operations and long term planning.

  • Build and monitor the organization’s annual budget, and manage the organization’s finances on an ongoing basis.

  • Supervise SAFA staff and volunteers, including summer staff and interns.

  • Maintain clear, open communication with SAFA Board of Directors and staff.

  • Oversee the management of SAFA’s three community facilities: Hammond Hall, the Schoolhouse, and Combs Studio.

  • Oversee risk management and insurance for the organization, its facilities, and programs.
