POETRY IN APRIL

April is National Poetry Month—and across Maine, we’re celebrating with gatherings that honor the power of words, the voices that shape our communities, and the enduring legacy of poetry in our state. From an open and welcoming afternoon at the State House to an evening with Maine’s Poets Laureate, these events invite you to listen, reflect, and even step up to the mic yourself. Whether you’re a lifelong poet or simply poetry-curious, there’s a place for you here.

POETRY CELBRATION

APRIL 3, 2026 | 1-4 p.m.

Maine State House, Hall of Flags | Augusta

Join us at the Maine State House for a lively celebration of National Poetry Month. This special afternoon will recognize this year’s Poetry Out Loud finalists, honor Maine Poet Laureate Julia Bouwsma as her term concludes, and announce the next Maine State Poet Laureate.

The event is open to all, and everyone is welcome to participate—share your own original work or read a favorite poem. Whether you come to listen or to lend your voice, this is a space for connection, expression, and community through poetry.
