Annual 10 x 8 Art Show and Sale

  • November 20, 2018

The 10 x 8 annual art show/sale started nineteen years ago as a three-day event in Ellsworth at a venue called Frankie's and was inspired by a similar 10 x 10 art show in Portland, Maine which offered affordably priced art before the holidays.

From that original 10 x 8 three-day event, the sale's basic premise, 10 pieces by 8 artists, 10" x 8", features artwork within reach for local audiences, and has remained the same with few differences. It is now a one day sale/exhibit, with the size varying up to 100 square inches. At the designated "start" time, (9:30 preview, 10:00 sale) work is sold "first come, first serve". With two of the original members participating, the artist run 10 x 8 group has welcomed an array of artists featuring painters, printmakers, and photographers, with styles ranging from abstract, representational, and illustrative. Sculptors have wrought work in fiber, metals, clay, bronze, and paper.

All the current artists create a fresh series specifically for the event. As most of them generally work on a larger scale, the small format can be a challenging inspiration. Given the parameters of size and the necessity of efficiency, the resulting work (shown in groupings of ten by each artist) often feels mighty, yet intimate, and offers for the artist the opportunity to build upon current themes of work, or branch into other inspired concepts, which for some, may evolve into future series.

With the group spanning generations, several are gallery owners, as well as others running their own studio galleries. A uniting bond is a commitment to their professional art practice, providing a commonality that is refreshing and rewarding. All the artists currently show nationally and internationally in galleries and public spaces, and have been recipients of fellowships and residencies.
