Applications for Hewnoaks Artists Residency open January 10!
- January 07, 2025
Hewnoaks, a multidisciplinary artist residency on the shores of Kezar Lake in Lovell, ME, will soon be accepting applications for its 2025 summer residency season. Along with artists (and curators) in all disciplines, writers working in all genres are invited to apply for one-week and ten-day long residencies in a backdrop of unsurpassed beauty and serenity. Applications open on Friday, January 10 are due Monday, February 10, and will be reviewed by a jury of independent professionals. While artists from anywhere are invited to apply, Hewnoaks reserves 75% of its residencies for artists who live in Maine at least half the year.
All invited artists are provided private lodgings in our historically and architecturally significant cabins, though participants are responsible for their own cooking and food, and transportation to and from the residency. We pride ourselves on offering a warm, low-structure, mutually supportive, anti-competitive space of creative freedom where artists at all stages of their career can dig into their projects while engaging in interdisciplinary dialogue with peers. Our non-traditional, short-duration residency periods were designed around the needs of artists who cannot afford to disconnect from families and day jobs for the extended commitment most other residencies require. Our program is process-oriented rather than product-driven, meaning artists are free to use their time however serves them best, with no expectations of output or requirement to present a finished work at the end of their stay. Many Hewnoaks residents report accomplishing more in the span of ten days than they do over the course of months at home.
A limited number of fellowships are available, including the Warren Memorial Foundation Fellowship, which offers a $750 stipend and is open to Westbrook, Maine-based artists in any discipline, including writing. Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance and Hewnoaks also offer one emerging writer per year the Bodwell Fellowship. Bodwell Fellows will receive a $500 award and a MWPA membership for one year or an extension of their current membership.
