Overview

Hewnoaks Artist Residency seeks an organized, responsible, customer-service-oriented, and creatively inclined individual to co-manage our summer residency program. Reporting to the Executive Director, this role is the event host and hospitality manager, functioning as the face of Hewnoaks to our artists in residence. It is ideal for a creative practitioner with experience in artist residencies or similar settings who is able to fit their own practice around the needs of our residents and program. Situated on the shore of the picturesque Kezar Lake, Hewnoaks is a vibrant, ever-expanding community of artists, and this position offers a unique opportunity to play a vital role in fostering a rich, collaborative environment and providing operational support. This position includes private living space and access to artist studios within the historic Hewnoaks Lodge.

Responsibilities

  • Create a welcoming, nurturing environment for artists-in-residence across all disciplines, identities, and backgrounds to flourish. Tasks include:
    • Manage the check-in and check-out processes on group departure and arrival days.
    • Orient new cohort members to the property and surrounding area, providing necessary information to facilitate their stay.
    • Plan and host one weekly social event to encourage community development among residents, board, and community members (e.g., cocktail receptions, potluck dinners, work shares). Receptions require occasional food preparation; potluck dinners require simple cooking.
    • Assist the Executive Director and board in organizing and executing community engagement events periodically, including a significant event in August (events may include workshops, open studios, exhibitions, and presentations).
  • Communicate and support safe practices through the stewardship of facilities:
    • Orient residents to cabin and workspace care, fire safety, and other essential guidelines and expectations.
    • Uphold and enforce Hewnoaks Artist Residency’s community standards, safe space policy, and codes of conduct.
    • Function as the first point of escalation for all facility issues.
    • Prepare for new arrivals by turning over cottages and program spaces with housekeeping service.
    • Act as delegate for the Executive Director to liaise with vendors and contractors responsible for groundskeeping, property maintenance, and custodial duties.
  • Amplify the value of Hewnoaks’ work to residents, community, staff, and board members:
    • Engage with residents weekly to collect feedback on their residency quality, including improvement opportunities.
    • Collect and share pictures and quotations for social media throughout the summer to highlight the residency experience.
    • Work with the Executive Director to promote the residency program through various channels, including social media and digital newsletters.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be willing to live and work on-site at the Hewnoaks Lodge for the full period of employment.
  • Expected to work approximately 15-20 hours per week, with flexibility based on the residency's needs.
    • As this is a seasonal position, you must be available to work as needed to meet the program’s scheduling requirements, including weekends and Federal holidays.
    • Specific work schedule to be mutually agreed upon with the Executive Director.
  • Excellent cultural competence, ability to engage respectfully with occupants of marginalized identities, and sophisticated command of the principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access.
  • Experience in food preparation and culinary services.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience with artists and artist residencies preferred.

Hewnoaks Artist Residency is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
