INANNA, SISTERS IN RHYTHM World music drum, percussion and vocal ensemble
- January 27, 2014
Kittery, ME - On Saturday, February 1, 2014 Portland's Inanna, Sisters in Rhythm, a world music drum, percussion and vocal ensemble will teaching and performing at The Dance Hall in Kittery. The day will include an afternoon workshop and an evening performance.
Inanna, Sisters in Rhythm, is a percussion and vocal ensemble that explores the heritage and rhythms of West Africa, through original arrangements and compositions invoking ancient traditions of the drum. Inanna was originally created by the participants of a drum class in Alna, Maine twenty three years ago. Since that time, Inanna has recorded and released six, full-length albums and has performed at numerous percussion festivals and community events. Inanna is deeply dedicated to the education and cultivation of peace and sharing among cultures through the power of music.
Inanna takes their name from an ancient Sumerian goddess, who held reign more than 4,000 years ago during a period when it is believed that drummers and dancers were predominantly women. The ensemble chose the name of this ancient goddess to express their ties with earlier traditions.
The evening performance is at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door and can be purchased at: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/542446
The afternoon workshop, Rhythm, Movement and Song will be from 1-4:00 p.m. The cost of the workshop is $60. Come and celebrate Imbolc/Brigid's Day, with Inanna. February 1st is the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox; the days are becoming longer, the sun, stronger. It is a good day to warm our bodies and awaken our spirits with movement, ecstatic rhythms, and song. Shake off the winter doldrums. Bring your drum, and/or percussion instrument......
